Today’s Weather Blog is a little different than usual. Today, February 5th, is National Weatherperson’s Day. This is a time set aside to recognize meteorologists and weather communicators, but instead of focusing on myself or the title, I want to use today to say thank you. Southern Tennessee Weather would not exist without the people who read this blog, watch the livestreams, and trust the forecast day after day.
This platform started with a simple goal: help people stay safe and informed. It did not begin as a brand or a business idea. It began with a love for weather and a deep respect for how much it affects life here in Southern Middle Tennessee. Road crews, schools, farms, power crews, first responders, and families all depend on knowing what is coming next. Living here and forecasting here taught me early on that our weather is local. Terrain matters. Timing matters. Small details matter. And just as important as the science is how that information is communicated. Weather does not need hype or fear. It needs clarity, honesty, and consistency.
What has made Southern Tennessee Weather possible is this community. You have trusted me during severe storms, winter weather, flooding rains, and long stretches of extreme heat or cold. You have asked thoughtful questions, shared posts, corrected rumors, and valued calm forecasting even when the forecast was not what you hoped for. That kind of trust is not something I ever take for granted. There are days in this job that are exhausting. Long nights. High-impact events. Constant updates when every word matters. But there are also moments that make all of it worth it. Messages from parents, first responders, and neighbors saying thank you. People telling me they felt prepared. Communities making decisions with confidence instead of panic. Those moments are why I do this!
Southern Tennessee Weather is about more than just the forecast. It is about service, education, and being present when it matters most. Every blog, graphic, and update is created with the same purpose: to give you information you can trust so you can make informed decisions for yourself and your family. On National Weatherperson’s Day, I want you to know how grateful I am for your support, your trust, and your patience. THANK YOU for choosing local weather. Thank you for valuing science-based forecasting. And thank you for allowing me to do something I care deeply about every single day. Thank you to the local businesses and hundreds of supporters that have taken the leap of faith to support me financially in this journey. Southern Tennessee Weather exists because of this community, and I am honored to serve it! This is just the beginning!
With sincere gratitude,
Elijah W. Kirby, Founder and Lead Meteorologist
