What Is WINGS?

WINGS (Weather Information Network & Ground Spotters) is a volunteer weather-watcher program created through a partnership between Duck River Electric Membership Corporation and Southern TN Weather.

The program will build a network of trained weather observers throughout Duck River Electric’s service territory. WINGS Spotters will provide localized rainfall measurements, storm reports, weather photographs, and information about weather-related impacts in their communities.

Radar and weather stations provide valuable information, but they cannot always show exactly what is happening in every neighborhood. Rainfall, hail, flooding, wind damage, and other conditions can vary considerably over short distances. Reports from WINGS Spotters will help fill those gaps and provide a clearer picture of what is happening on the ground.

What Will WINGS Spotters Do?

Selected WINGS Spotters will serve as volunteer weather observers for their communities. Spotters may be asked to:

• Measure and report rainfall when rain occurs.

• Report hail, flooding, snow, wind damage, downed trees, and other significant weather.

• Share photographs of notable weather and cloud formations.

• Report local storm impacts when it is safe to do so.

• Help promote weather awareness and preparedness.

WINGS Spotters will never be expected to chase storms or place themselves in danger. The most important rule of the program is simple: shelter first, report second. A rain gauge will be provided.

Training and Communication

Selected participants will “earn their WINGS” by completing a required training workshop hosted by Duck River Electric and Southern TN Weather.

Training will cover basic weather observation, cloud identification, measuring rainfall, submitting useful storm reports, weather safety, and using the program’s reporting system.

WINGS Spotter Central will serve as the main hub for submitting observations, receiving announcements, accessing training resources, and communicating during significant weather events.

Every selected participant will also receive a free goodie bag full of WINGS swag!

Who Should Apply?

No professional weather experience is required. We are looking for dependable community members who are interested in weather, public service, and helping their neighbors stay informed.

Applicants should:

• Be a member of Duck River Electric Membership Corporation in good standing.

• Have a strong interest in weather and community service.

• Be willing to attend the required training workshop.

• Have reliable access to a smartphone, tablet, or computer.

• Be able to submit timely and accurate weather observations.

• Be willing to remain active in the program throughout the year.

• Always follow the program’s safety and reporting guidelines.

The inaugural WINGS class will include representatives from communities across Duck River Electric’s service territory. Applications will be reviewed jointly by Duck River Electric and Southern TN Weather, with priority given to applicants who help provide broad geographic coverage.

Submitting an application does not guarantee selection. Qualified applicants who are not selected for the inaugural class may be considered for future openings as the program grows.
